No Judgement, No Labels, Just Humans
Are you wondering where to go? What to do next? Who to speak to? What to do to support your child? How to approach their school?
I provide family and individual counselling for children and young people who are part of the LGBTI community, with a specialism for those who identify as transgender, gender diverse, gender non-conforming, or non-binary. This can be via Zoom meetings, or you can work through individual packs with your child and family, at your own pace.
All sessions are conducted on-line at the moment, via Zoom, due to COVID-19 restrictions. This means increased accessibility and availability.
Experience, both Professional and Personally
Hello, my name is Fiona and I am a proud member of the LGBTI community and even prouder parent of a transgendered child. I identify as non-binary and use they/them pronouns.
As a teacher for over 25 years and latterly a Principal, I have a great deal of experience working with children.
As well as my teaching degrees, I hold a Diploma in Counselling Skills and a Diploma in Children and Young People's Mental Health and Well-being.
Personally, I have been working with and within the LGBTI community for over 20 years, working on anti-homophobic and anti-transphobic bullying policies in schools and for education authorities, in Australia and the UK.

What Do You Offer?
Experience, counselling and support, in two optional ways.
I've been where you may well be now, worried, confused, frightened and wondering, what now? Where do I go for help and support? Unfortunately, for children under the age of 12 who are part of the LGBTI community and especially for those who identify as gender non-conforming, gender-diverse or any other parameter therein, there is very little available in Australia in terms of counselling support for those children or their families.
Having been through this process myself, I can provide you and your family with the support you need through these often quite confusing times, as well as providing you with practical resources, such as information that might be helpful for your child's school, the names of inclusive books that reflect LGBTI families, transgender and gender-diverse characters and other materials that may help your family initiate difficult conversations with family and friends.
I have also worked extensively with children who have been bullied, have low self-esteem and with those who self-harm.
Option one is via 'virtual counselling', using Zoom. I use different types of counselling techniques to help children overcome negative thought processes, re-establishing positive self-esteem and self-image.
I also work with parents, which can include putting you in touch with support networks in your area (if there are any) and letting you know how we went about setting one up in ours if there isn't one where you are. You are not alone in this journey, but we all need pointing in the right direction.
Option two is by purchasing the TRANSpire resource materials, without the counselling sessions. While I do recommend counselling to guide you through the process, it is easy to work through the resource materials yourself, with your child.
Each pack is designed to be worked through with your child, family and school and will provide you with a place to start, ideas to follow and a guide to suggest next steps.
Each page is clearly marked with who it is intended for, so you know what's next.
If you would like to order the packs, please complete the order forms below and they will be sent to you via email.
How does it work?
Your child's health and well-being is of paramount importance and child protection is a non-negotiatable part of that. As all sessions are via Zoom, I request that all sessions are conducted in an open area, such as a lounge room - not a bedroom. I also request that for all children and young people under the age of 16, that a parent / carer is either in the room, or that the door is left open.
You can either contact me first by telephone for a free 20 min consultation, or you can book a 50 min session directly. All sessions are via Zoom, to meet with current COVID-19 regulations. Payment is made by bank transfer and must be made at time of booking.
Please email me with the day, date and time of your choosing and I shall confirm with you via email. Once payment has been made, your booking is confirmed and you will be sent a Zoom link for your appointment.
Please note - all times are in AEST - if you need an appointment outwith the times offered, please contact me by phone.
